Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh is one of Pratham’s growing states, with plans for expansion in a variety of areas. Pratham is planning to set up Pratham Training, Assessment and Placement Centers (PRATAP), transitioning to a post-secondary institution for volunteers and all youth.
As per the 2001 census, Madhya Pradesh has a literacy rate of 70.53%. The ASER Report 2009 has shown that whilst literacy and numerical capabilities of children in grades 1 and 2 are relatively high, the same cannot be said for children in grades 3 and 4. The India State Hunger Index, compiled by the International Food Policy Research Institute has rated the malnutrition situation in Madhya Pradesh between Ethiopia and Chad. The local economy of the state is primarily rural agriculture, which is largely dependent on weather conditions, and as a result of this, education may directly suffer, or prosper, as a result of these outcomes.
Working with parents, officials, village leaders, children and teachers, we provide a robust Read India program in partnership with local communities:
Read India
Pratham is currently running Read India in 3000 villages, leveraging over 5000 volunteers. One volunteer teaches children in grades 1 & 2, focusing on basic literacy and numeracy skills, while the other volunteer teaches children in grades 3-5, focusing on reading fluency and comprehension, as well as Arithmetic operations. Volunteers also teach English, where the focus is on letter recognition, vocabulary building and ability to conduct basic greetings in English.
Education for Education (EFE)
EFE is a program operating in Madhya Pradesh designed to strengthen Read India by offering courses to volunteers in exchange for her contributions to the program. In the current phase of EFE, computer courses are available, while spoken English will be offered in the future.
