PCVC

The Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children addresses the source of illiteracy.

Child labor and other forms of abuse are a major cause of illiteracy.

That realization led us to start the Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children (PCVC) in Mumbai in 2001. The task force we put together under the Government of Maharashtra eventually rescued and rehabilitated almost 25,000 working children in the city.

PCVC is a force in ending child abuse in India.

Now in 7 states throughout India, PCVC has already reached out to thousands of vulnerable children in urban and rural areas and raised awareness of India’s child labor and child abuse problems to new levels.

The objectives of PCVC:

  • Reach out and address issues of all vulnerable children
  • Prevent children from entering the labor market
  • Withdraw child workers and other vulnerable children from work or any exploitative situations
  • Prepare children to be mainstreamed and sustained into formal school – monitor and improve their learning level
  • Raise awareness on child rights issues (child labor, child abuse, disability)
  • Advocacy with the government

PCVC is reshaping the policies related to working children.

PCVC has become a key partner with state governments in advising legislation concerning child labor and in drafting official protocol for dealing with rescued children.  In addition, we are collaborating with government and advocacy groups to create task force models and using Pratham’s clout to ensure the cities we operate in are child labor free. We’ve also set up a number of residential schools for rescued children who can’t safely be returned to their families
