English Program

Teaching children to speak English is next
on Pratham’s agenda.

Preparing India’s next generation for the global marketplace.

Pratham’s English Program targets children 8-14 years old. Our goal is to help them build basic conversational skills and have the ability to read and comprehend simple English texts.

An aggressive course that teaches children the English basics.

English is taught daily to the children for one hour. 75% of their time is dedicated to listening and the other 25% to reading. As their reading ability grows, the pattern reverses and they dedicate 75% of their time to reading. During class, the kids are encouraged to only speak only English. Throughout the program, their progress is monitored through pre, mid and post tests.

The results speak for themselves.

By the end of our eight-month program, most children can pronounce the alphabet and ‘known’ words correctly. The majority of them builds a vocabulary of approximately 750 words and can recite 1,000 sentences. They also learn to ask 15 different types of ‘wh’ questions, such as where and what.

Another community-run program that’s spreading nationwide.

Our English Program started small with classes typically conducted at the community level only, but that’s changing.  Since being piloted in 2006-2007, the program is now being introduced to rural and urban locations throughout India.
